About the 30 Museums Project

A well known museum

I used to consider myself pretty museum-savvy, especially in regards to New York City. I mean, I’d seen every special exhibit at the Museum of Natural History since ‘02 and I could navigate the Met without a map. BUT my reality was shattered one day when I read that New York City has over ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY museums.

I knew what had to be done. My museum-loving life was about to change forever.

I decided to visit one museum in New York City every day for 30 days. I put my museum-love to the test and in the process explored WAY beyond museum mile to discover some of New York City’s lesser known cultural institutions so you, dear reader, wouldn’t have to!

I evaluated each museum based on how interesting, fun, and organized they were, and delivered all that info to you via this blog so you will be well prepared in the event that you should embark on your own museum-going adventure. Trust me, I think you’ll find some of the lesser known museums just as surprising as I did!

In order to be fair to all the museums, I followed this strict code:

1. I shall visit at least one museum in every borough of New York City (yes, including Staten Island)
2. I shall not visit any Zoos or Botanical Gardens, only Museums
3. In large museums, I shall focus on permanent collections only, not traveling exhibits
4. I shall visit one and ONLY one museum per day so that I will not burn out and judge a museum unfairly

Please see my “Visiting Schedule” Page for a complete list of which museums I visited each day and to read my reviews.
